Andy Murray came short in his quest to win his third Wimbledon trophy. The British tennis player lost to Sam Querrey, who took advantage of the problems affecting the Briton’s hip. The American advanced to the semifinals winning 3-6, 6-4, 6-7, 6-1 and 6-1.
The Scot could now lose the number one rank of the ATP at the hands of Serbian Novak Djokovic, who is looking for his fourth Wimbledon trophy. The Belgrade native, faces Czech Tomas Berdych on Wednesday and must win the tournament on Sunday to reclaim the throne of world tennis.
A year after upsetting and eliminating Djokovic (the 2015 champion) in the third round, Querrey schocked Murray, defending champion, as he won in two hours and 42 minutes.
Murray’s defeat, who was looking to advance to the semifinals for the eighth consecutive year, leaves the door open for Djokovic to regain the position of number one of the world.
Sam Querrey, the first American to reach the semi-finals of a Grand Slam since Andy Roddick did it here in 2009, will face the winner of the match between Luxembourg’s Gilles Muller and Croatian Marin Cilic.
The American finished the game with his 27th ace frustrating Murray’s options to respond. The Briton, who lost 12 of the last 14 games, was visibly in pain and his hip problems did not allow him to match Querrey’s level of play.
The 29-year-old American, ranked 28th in the world, defeated South African Kevin Anderson 5-7, 7-6, 6-3, 6-7 y 6-3 to reach this match against Murray. The defending champion meanwhile defeated Frenchman Benoit Paire in straight sets 7-6, 6-4 y 6-4.
Querrey, who had a total of 70 winners, was rewarded for his aggressive tennis and refusal to give up. He benefited from Murray’s physical problems as it was evident that the longer the match went, the more agony Murray was in.
