It was the second largest comeback in NFL history. The Indianapolis Colts were 21 points down to the Kansas City Chiefs at half time and shortly after the opening of the third quarter the Chief’s lead had jumped to 28 and things were looking pretty grim for Andrew Luck and his Colts.
But Chuck Pagano has instilled a hardy spirit in this Colt team and whatever he said to them at halftime must have done the trick because the second half of the game was a different story all together. The Colts outscored the Chiefs 35-13 in the second half and won the game by one point on a 64 yard touchdown pass from Luck to T.Y. Hilton with 4:21 to go in the game.
The New Orleans Saints had established such a reputation for playing badly on the road that not many people gave them much of a chance to beat the Philadelphia Eagles on their home field on a freezing winter night. Not many outside of Louisiana that is. The Who ‘Dats never lost faith.
After an entire first half of play the score was only 7-6 Eagles and the TV commentators were noting the lack of scoring action. That changed in the second half as the Saints scored 14 points and the Eagles scored 7 in the third quarter. The lead changed back and forth in the final period with Philadelphia going out front at the 4:57 mark.
But this time Drew Brees and his Saints were not to be denied the win. They marched down the field and got into position for a last second field goal from Shayne Graham to win the game 26-24.
At kickoff time on Sunday afternoon in Green Bay Wisconsin, the ambient temperature was well below zero. Lambeau field was bleak and colorless and not a patch of green was to be seen except for the Packers uniforms. Colin Kaepernick accounted for the majority of the 49ers offense in the first half with 117 yards passing on 8 completions out of 15 passes with one interception. He also rushed for 47 yards on the ground.
The two teams spent the entire third quarter trying to stay warm and scoring no points at all. But then, with 5 minutes left in the game the Packer’s Mason Crosby tied the game at 20 all with a 24 yard field goal.
Then the 49ers made first down after first down and ended up kicking a 33 yard field to ice the game… if you will excuse the pun.
