The four team playoff system that is currently being projected for NCAA Football is not going to work. Everyone knows it. The same guy is running the new show that ran the BCS show… which never worked either. How this came to be is a mystery to many… but, that is what we have to work with at this point in time.
We are in the middle of March Madness featuring the always exciting, always unpredictable, College Hoops Tournament. Sports fans love this series of games and eagerly look forward to them each year. Why not do the same for football?
Can you dig it? A 64 team national playoff tournament for college football in the first part of January to cap off each seasons play with a real champion. Now, that would be fun… and funds would flow into the coffers of the Universities involved.
One of the principal arguments against the 64 team tournament is the interruption of the academic schedules of the players and trainers involved. They were off for Christmas anyway. Surely all that extra income could afford them private tutors until they got caught up with their classmates.
However, don’t get too excited about all of this because it’s probably never going to happen. It was tough enough just getting them to set up a four team series.
But what if… I mean, it could be glorious!
Prospective intriguing matchups could be #1 seed Alabama vs UL Monroe, the giant killer, #3 Florida vs Miami for a little in state rivalry or perhaps Oklahoma State vs Louisiana Tech would be a game in which the totals could go into the hundreds of points.
Out West we could see Stanford taking on USC in a cross town conflict or we could see Baylor and Arizona State going at it in yet another high scoring tug-of-war.
Ohio State would be another #1 seed and most likely start off against a school such as Navy while Vanderbilt and Michigan State will be in the thick of it again
Notre Dame will be right up there among the top teams and could well end up taking on Johnny Football and Texas A&M. Wouldn’t that be cool?
The possible matchups are endless and will surely be left up to an all star committee if the 64 team set up should ever come to be. Let’s do it!
