The announcement came in the middle of a rather ho-hum Traveler’s Championship at TPC River Highlands outside of Cromwell, Connecticut and it made more golfing fans sit up and take notice than anything that had happened out on the links at Highlands.
Tiger’s coming back!
On Friday, as the second day of the Traveler’s was getting under way, Tiger Woods announced on Facebook that he was going to take part in the Quicken Loans National at the Congressional Country Club which takes place the last weekend in June.
Woods will reappear on the golfing scene after missing a major chunk of this season with a back injury. Even though he is just getting back to taking full swings once again, Tiger will participate at the Quicken Loans National at the Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland near Washington D.C.
It may appear that Woods is pushing his return somewhat too early, but this particular golfing match is being played for the benefit of the Tiger Woods Foundation under new sponsorship for Quicken Loans.
Woods has commented several times about how much he misses playing golf and his absence from the PGA Tour left a void that no one else was able to fill. Golfing fans around the world will be glad to see Tiger Woods back out on the links. He doesn’t have to win, just be there.
Woods made a valiant effort to keep on playing this season, but he was hurting. It became painful just to watch him, especially to his many devoted fans. So finally, on March 31st, Tiger underwent microdiscectomy surgery to relieve the pressure and pain caused by a pinched nerve in his back.
In his announcement Woods said, “After a lot of therapy I have recovered well and will be supporting my foundation next week at the Quicken Loans National. I’ve just started to hit full shots but it’s time to take the next step. I will be a bit rusty but I want to play myself back into competitive shape. Excited for the challenge ahead.”
Unlike most other sports, Tiger’s competitors are even excited about his return. Bubba Watson commented, “It’s good for the game of golf. We’ve been wanting to see it. No matter if he misses the cut, no matter if he just finishes in the middle of the pack, it’s a great thing for golf that he’s back, Normally I don’t watch golf, but I’ll watch when Tiger’s playing”.
Don’t be surprised if this year’s match at the Congressional breaks a few television rating records.
