THE THREE HUNDRED MILLION DOLLAR MEN

Way back in 2001 the Green Bay Packers made their star quarterback, Bret Favre, the charter member of American professional football’s ‘one hundred million dollar club’. Favre became the first NFL player to sign a deal worth that staggering amount of money.
It seems almost humorous now that Favre’s new deal was called a ‘lifetime’ contract extension by the Packers which stipulated 10 years of playing for a cool $100,000,000. The Packers were happy, and surely Bret Favre was ecstatic, as well as honored.
Now the San Diego Padres of MLB have announced that they just contracted the top free agent available this year in the form of Manny Machado for a cool $300,000,000. That’s right folks, eight zeros! Once again the deal is for a 10 year contract with Machado being able to opt out at the end of five.
But why would anyone opt out of a thirty million dollar a year contract to play baseball? Figuring a 40 hour week and a 50 week year we get 2,000 hours. At thirty million per year, that works out to a nice round $15,000 per hour. Not bad wages for playing ball.
Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera, the Dodgers Clayton Kershaw, David Price of the Red Sox and Zack Greinke of the Diamondbacks all have contracts in excess of the $30,000,000.
Three time Cy Young winner Max Scherzer of the Washington Nationals also has a $30 million dollar a year contract for which he delivered 300 strike outs last year with only 51 walks.
Left hand pitchers Jon Lester of the Cubs and Justin Verlander of the Astros are currently playing on contracts in excess of $25 million bucks per year as is Met’s center fielder Yoenis Cespedes.
The other big time free agent in major league baseball for 2019 was Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals. At a mere 26 years old, Harper has signed what was at the time the largest contract in USA sports history at a cool $330,000,000 over 13 years with the Philadelphia Phillies.
Ah but let’s not forget the guy many are calling the greatest active baseball player today, Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels. Trout is now set up through 2030 in LA with a fat $426,500,000 deal that tops the list of current contracts.
But, while these numbers remain staggering to most mortals, if you figure it in 2019 money, the contract signed by Alex Rodriguez in 2001 would now be worth over $590,000,000!
