All work stopped for a while at the 24 story One American Place Building in downtown Baton Rouge as the people inside the offices rushed to the glass walls with cameras in hand to take pictures of some nut rappelling down the side of the building in the middle of the morning.
Wait a minute, that’s a nut alright… but it’s our nut! It was LSU head coach Les Miles out there hanging above the streets of Baton Rouge! As usual, Tiger fans just shake their heads and smile broadly at the antics of their popular coach.
Miles went ‘Over the Edge’ to help a local Baton Rouge organization dedicated to facilitate adoption of parentless children in the area. Coach Miles and several other prominent citizens did the 24 story rappel to call attention to the plight of these children with the ultimate goal of finding homes for 100 homeless kids.
An associate of Coach Miles pointed out, “Anybody who really knows Miles knows how much his family means to him. He’s extremely involved in his kids’ lives, so it’s nice to see him doing something like this to help other kids who are in need of a family” Miles will turn 60 this November but he looked as agile as a teenager gliding down the face of Baton Rouge’s tallest building.
Les Miles has gained a reputation as being one of the most entertaining personalities in college football… he is also one of the winningest and most popular head coaches in the NCAA. So he eats a little grass now and then. Les only eats grass from the field at LSU Stadium… it’s for luck. Puts him in touch with the field. He even carries a small vile of the home turf when playing away games… just in case.
You can see the coach rappelling down the building at LSUSports.com and probably on YouTube as well. The view from the top of One American Place is quite spectacular including the Mississippi River with its beautiful bridge and Tiger Stadium to the south.
Every year, Tiger fans find something else to admire about Les Miles. This last little stunt will surely win him some more points with the locals. One blogger wrote in, “Good for Les. He’s a man who takes action. He doesn’t just donate money for a tax deduction.”
So, once again, the ‘Mad Hatter’ takes the over and wins for everyone involved.
