Larson Earns First Career Victory, Qualifies For The Chase
Kyle Larson managed to overtake Chase Elliot after the race was resumed with nine laps to go to earn the victory at the Pure Michigan 400.
Before the race, Vegas had Larson odds to win this race at 15 to 1, the same as Chase Elliot. Both rising stars entered the race without career victories but in the end it was Larson who managed to take advantage of the situation and cross the finish line first.
With 12 laps to go a caution came out due Michael Annett’s slow running car. When the caution was called off the considerable distance that Elliot had on Larson was greatly reduced. When Elliot’s tires spun, Larson took the lead and never looked back. Brad Keselowski, Ryan Blaney and Kevin Harvick rounded up the top five.
This is the second time this season that Elliot comes up second at Michigan International Speedway as he lost in similar fashion against Joey Logano. As for Larson, it took him exactly three seasons and 24 races to earn the first checkered flag of his career. The win qualified him for the Chase for the Sprint Cup Playoffs when only two races remain in the calendar.
NASCAR travels next week to the Darlington Speedway in Darlington, South Carolina, for the Bojangles Southern 500.
