The New York Mets gave a strong performance in preparation for what lies ahead for the squad as we enter the series. It’s gonna be a perhaps long run for the team as the Chicago Cubs will be prepared for their showdown on Sunday, As for the first game it was clear from the start the outcome of the game.
Matt Harvey allowed only four hits in a little over the seven inning mark, while Daniel Murphy and Travis d’Arnaud contributed homers for the New York Mets imposing the 4-2 victory over the Cubs on Saturday for the first game of the National League Championship series.
Harvey allowed two runs and struck out nine. He left the mound after giving up a home run to Kyle Schwarber, who sent the ball flying 459 feet from the home plate. Jeurys Familia finished the job to be credited with the rescue aided by Murphy, who dove to catch the ball in the middle, as it accounted for out number 27.
Murphy took the Mets on the lead in the first act, he managed to tie a team record by hitting a homer for the third straight game in the postseason. Starlin Castro tied the board in the fifth inning by an RBI double that sent the ball over the Dominican Juan Lagares, center fielder. Curtis Granderson drove in another run with a single to recover the Mets lead in the bottom of the inning facing off against a Jon Lester.
D’Arnaud hit his homer in the sixth, another one allowed from Lester. The ball crashed into the giant apple that is located behind the center field wall. Granderson put the situation in 4-2 via a sacrifice fly in the seventh, to end Lester’s performance. Jake Arrieta, leader in victories in the majors during the regular season, will start for the Cubs on Sunday, against rookie Noah Syndergaard. The game will surely spread the pace for the series as a make it or break it for the unprepared teams and the fans that will join the campaign.
