Michael Jordan celebrated his 50th birthday a few days ago by renting out the entire Houston Museum of Fine Arts to consecrate his passing the 50 mark with 200 of his friends. Jordan has been one of the great success stories in sports, playing the game to the max and retiring at just the right time to enjoy a comfortable retirement from basketball. Well, his retirement is more than comfortable. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Michael Jordan left the sport with his body and health intact and a whole big pot of money.
His overwhelming success in working with the Nike Company to produce the “Air Jordan” basketball shoes has ensured that he will never be lacking for funds. Some say that he is the richest man in the history of the NBA.
Fans and media alike are turning the Jordan 50th into a giant celebration with coverage and commentary continuing throughout the ceremony. MJ surely considered throwing the bash at his own $20 million pad just outside Houston or perhaps even going down to Jupiter, Florida to celebrate in the newly finished $12.5 million estate on the Jack Nicholas golf course, just down the street from Tiger Woods.
This will not be a cheap party. Jordan made a “donation” of $100,000 to the museum to secure the place and then also had to cover the added costs of food and beverage plus valet attendants, security and special performers…..just to mention a few. However, it is doubtful that MJ will feel too much of a financial pinch. A six figure birthday party is well within his budget.
And Michael is not exactly being quiet about it either. He has been much in the news lately with reporters constantly asking him for his opinion of everyone and everything having to do with basketball today. One of the things that comes up often is Jordan being asked, who is the better basketballer playing today?
Is it Kobe Bryant or LeBron James?
For the time being, Michael is sticking with Kobe.
Another favorite topic of discussion with MJ is making comparisons between the game of basketball today and how it was when he was at his peak back in the ‘90s’.
According to Jordan, there are only 4 contemporary players who could even compete. They are, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Tim Duncan and Dirk Nowitzki.
Be that as it may, Jordan is one of the worlds’ most recognizable sports figures. Happy Birthday Michael!
