What’s happening in America’s Heartland? In the state of Missouri, the ‘show me state’… are they putting something special in the corn?
The University of Missouri Tigers football team is undefeated even though they are now competing in the SEC where the going gets tough in a big hurry. But the Tigers have held their own so far and are the only undefeated team in the
SEC West which boasts some pretty good football teams.
But look! The Kansas City Chiefs are also undefeated at and they have played some pretty good teams as well. Yes, Kansas City and Arrowhead Stadium… are still located in Missouri. Under newly arrived Head Coach Andy Reid, the Chiefs have not only crawled their way out of the NFL cellar, they have clawed their way all the way back to the top of the ranks.
But wait! The St. Louis Cardinals are in the World Series with the Boston Red Sox too. Big games coming up in St. Louis…. which also happens to be in Missouri.
They call it the ‘Show Me State’ but so far this season, no one has been able to show these Missouri teams much of anything or nothing new at least. Some are calling it the ‘Missouri Miracle’, others saw it coming all along.
The facilities around Missouri or “Mizzou” as the locals call it, have all seen their better days but who cares. So what if Faurot Field on the University of Missouri campus is 87 years old and ready for an upgrade. Down on the field it’s all the same game, big house or small, old or new.
Arrowhead Stadium, which opened in 1972, has seen some wear and tear over the years but the Chiefs don’t seem to care. The fans show up and make noise and the team just keeps on winning.
The Cardinals play at Busch Stadium, the house that Beer built, which has already hosted 3 World Series’ since it opened in 2006. The Cardinals have been one of the hottest teams of the decade in Major League Baseball. Folks in St. Louis, and all over the state, are eager to see the Cardinal’s battle the Red Sox this week for baseball’s most coveted prize.
Ironically, sports fans in Missouri don’t often see eye-to-eye across the board. For example, Chiefs fans may like the Royals better than the Cardinals and Cardinals fans may like the Rams better than the Chiefs but, they are all Missouri Tiger fans this season.
