UFC president Dana White confirmed that MMA Fighter Jon Jones tested positive for illegal substances after his win over Daniel Cormier at UFC 214 and will probably have his light heavyweight title taken from him again by the organization.
TMZ revealed Tuesday that Jones tested positive for Turinabol, an anabolic steroid, during a test that took place a day before his July 29 bout against Cormier, where he won after a brutal and a series of punches to the head of his rival.
In May 2015, at UFC 187, Jones was scheduled to face Anthony Johnson. However, weeks before the event, he was suspended indefinitely and stripped of his title because he was involved in a traffic accident in which a person was injured and where he was accused of leaving the scene of the incident.
This is the second time that Jones fails a US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) test. The first was for taking banned substances in 2016, before the fight against Cormier at UFC 200 in July 2016, so he was removed from the main event and was also sanctioned with a year of suspension.
Jones is the only UFC champion ever to be stripped of a title for disciplinary reasons.
This time the penalty can be up to four years, while the UFC light heavyweight title will most likely return to Cormier’s hands.
Jones is temporarily suspended pending the resolution of his case and also faces a potential penalty from the California State Athletic Commission, which regulated UFC 214.
Jones and Cormier met for the first time at UFC 182 in January 2015 in Las Vegas, where after five rounds, Jones retained his title.
