It seems like everyone and his uncle is putting up a Mock NFL Draft these days. There should be some sort of qualifying process, don’t you think? Personally, I think that we have been so over saturated with these ‘mocks’ that no one really pays attention to them anymore.
One of the most speculated about players in the 2014 NFL Draft is former Texas A&M quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner, Johnny Manziel. Some of the ‘mockers’ have him going at number one, while others claim that he will not be drafted in the first round. What do these guys really know anyway?
While some are lauding his praises, others are bringing up maturity, social life and extra-curricular activities which, don’t have much to do with life on the football field. All the while Johnny Football continues to impress. Other quarterbacks showed up in gym shorts for their pro day. Manziel showed up in full black pads and ready to kick butt, and he did.
When he went through Gruden’s Grinder, he came off as intelligent and well in control. Even the great Jon Gruden seemed impressed when he asked the question, ‘You went from a red-shirt freshman vying for the Aggies quarterback position under new head coach Kevin Sumlin to standing on stage in New York accepting the Heisman Trophy six months later, how did that happen?”
Now Johnny Manziel has racked up some more brownie points in his quest to become a quarterback in the NFL. One of the standard testing tools used by the league is called the Wonderlic Test which has been around for a number of years now and gives us good records to compare players.
Manziel scored a 32 on the test which required him to answer 50 multiple choice questions in 12 minutes. The average score is in the low twenties. Among active NFL quarterbacks a 32 puts him pretty high up with that score and well ahead of Blake Bortles, who scored a 28 and Teddy Bridgewater with a 20.
The questions asked on the Wonderlic test are not all that difficult and have nothing whatsoever to do with football, but, the short time limit given is a wild card that can make the whole thing seem more challenging. It is the most famous test of this type used by the NFL to evaluate prospective players.
The only working quarterbacks to outscore Manziel on the Wonderlic were Alex Smith, Eli Manning, Colin Kaepernick, Andrew Luck, Tony Romo, Aaron Rogers and Tom Brady, not a bad club to be joining.
