Johnny Manziel is one of the most talked about college football players in recent memory. Also known as ‘Johnny Football’, Manziel is probably the most famous non-professional athlete in the world, certainly in the USA he is.
Few athletes in modern times have gathered such attention after only two years of college football. Remember that Manziel was a red shirt freshman vying for the quarterback job at Texas A&M when Kevin Sumlin came on to the scene. Six months later he was standing on stage in New York City receiving the coveted Heisman Trophy, the first freshman ever to win the prestigious award.
So maybe he went a little crazy after receiving the big award. Johnny got invitations from all directions and he himself admits that he had to learn to say no in order to get back to being the simple Texas football player from Kerrville that he really is. It appears that he has now managed to do that after weathering all sorts of criticism from the press about his flamboyant life style.
He has made the acquaintance of several big named pro athletes like LeBron James & Chris Paul. Aside from a certain faction of the press, everyone seems to like him. He does come off as sincere on camera during interviews. Even Jon Gruden gave him a thumbs-up after doing a session of his quarterback camp with Manziel.
Not surprisingly, Johnny Football turns out to be pretty good at dunking the basketball, as recent postings on YouTube will show. For 5’11+”, he gets up there for the jam with the best of them. But then, considering his performance on the gridiron the past couple of years, it shouldn’t come as any great surprise that he can also play good basketball.
Then we see an article where Manziel is being presented with a custom made Scotty Cameron Circle T Putter which ranks up there with the best putters around these days. It even has a little Number 2 engraved on the bottom left referring to Manziel’s number when he played QB for the Aggies. Apparently, he is a pretty good golfer as well.
But not everyone loves Johnny Football. Some folks see his as a showboating kid who is out of control and egotistical to boot. Others are not so hard on the young man. Think back to when you were 21 years old, in the face of so much sudden fame and popularity, would you and I have handled it any better?
