The Indianapolis Colts on Sunday hired former Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich as their new head coach. The Colts signed Reich to a five-year deal less than a week after being jilted by New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.
With Reich’s hiring, the Colts have finally put the last piece of the NFL’s head coaching puzzle in place as they found the guy to replace Chuck Pagano.
After all the drama of the McDaniels saga, the Colts were finally able to sign their man who comes fresh off a Super Bowl victory over the Patriots and was a quarterback in the NFL for 14 years.
Reich played in two Super Bowls with the Buffalo Bills and is better remembered for leading the Bills to their biggest postseason comeback victory over the Houston Oilers in the 1992 AFC Wild Card game.
After retiring, Reich left the league for a while but later returned to become an NFL assistant coach for 12 years (including six with the Colts). After bouncing around the league with several teams he spent the last two years with the Eagles and is now back to where his coaching career began, this time to embark on his first stint as a head coach.
Hiring Reich could be a good move for the development of Andrew Luck in particular. As a former NFL quarterback Reich knows the problems and challenges NFL quarterbacks must endure through their careers. He may be able to slow the game down for Luck as he’s big on details and on making sure the little things are done the right way.
Reich gives his players a different perspective on the game and teaches them what to expect during the course of it, so they can have a bigger understanding of what winning football is all about.
