Remember how funny Bret Farve looked in a New York Jets uniform? It just didn’t look right. Then when he donned the purple jersey of the Packers biggest rival, it went beyond not looking right, it was just wrong. Fans began to forget just how Farve was when he played at Green Bay.
Packers fans cried betrayal when Farve ended up in Minnesota but his playing days at legendary Lambeau field will forever ranked as one of the greatest reins of a professional football quarterback since the inception of the league. In fact, Bret Farve helped to define pro football in the 1990’s.
Farve’s final years in the NFL turned into sort of a side show owing to all of the off field issues, real or unreal, that arose during that period. It was kind of ugly and a bit embarrassing, especially who held Bret Farve up on a pedestal after following his career since he was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in 1991.
Some animosity developed in Wisconson after Farve left for the Jets and those still on the borderline came down hard on Bret when he joined the hated Vikings in 2008. But then was then and now is now and Bret Farve is generally considered a first ballot shoe in to the NFL Hall of Fame when the 2016 voting comes around. The folks in Canton didn’t forget.
Time cures all and now the folks up in Green Bay are preparing to welcome back their progical son and enshrine him into the Packers Hall of Fame. There was some trepadation that Farve would be booed if he showed up at Lambeau Field for the ceremony, but Bret said that he wasn’t at all worried about that.
There have been some pretty tough quarterbacks in the NFL, but none were tougher than Bret Farve. He played his heart out for 18 seasons on one of the toughest stages in the world. Including playoffs, Frave played in 321 NFL games. You would have to go back pretty far to equal that record….perhaps to tough guys like George Blanda of the old Houston Oilers.
So the famous Number Four green and gold jersey that Farve wore during his tenure in Green Bay will be retired and hung with the other memories of this, the most iconic football team in the NFL.
When asked how he felt about that, Farve replied, “Wow, I’m speechless. I can’t thank you enough. I’m honored. I mean that from the bottom of my heart.”
