What on earth could make a room full of guys, averaging in weight around 270 pounds, break down and cry so hard that they had to hide their faces? I mean serious sobs, shaking shoulders, runny noses… the whole nine yards.
It was an awesome spectacle seen all across the country on television and over the internet. It was the 2014 NFL Draft and it was quite a dramatic show. Once again Roger Goodell and staff have succeeded in turning a simple selection process into a major production of nationwide proportions.
That’s good for football and especially good for all those die-hard professional football fans who are jonesin’ for their favorite sport about this time of the year. It was sort of like an off season Super Bowl but held in Radio City Music Hall in downtown Manhattan.
Instead of a troupe of performers waiting to go on stage, the Green Room at RCMH was filled with 30 of the top draft prospects who were especially invited to be present and participate in this most special of events in the lives of young football players everywhere.
The Over would be a pretty safe wager if you were betting on the total weight of those 30 players. They ranged all the way from about 189 pounds to over 350, there were some beefy young men in that Green Room. Many had their Mothers, girlfriends and other family members there with them for comfort and of course to share the moment of glory.
The moment their names were called the whole world changed for this select group of gifted young athletes. Talk about a life changing event. Any youthful issues are now off the table, it’s time to grow up and perform well on a very big stage.
But most of them will be ready. Most of them have been dreaming about draft day for many years. It’s a lofty goal that not many are able to attain. But these guys made it and the raw emotion that flowed in that back stage room when the announcements were made were so tangible that it could be felt over the airways by everyone looking in on the ceremony.
The Under would be a good solid bet on how many times these huge tackles and guards have been caught crying in public. Most hid their faces with their hats or hands but they could not hide the tears this time. It was enough to make a grown man cry.
