It all got underway on Thursday Night Football when the 3.5 point underdog Kansas City Chiefs went to Philadelphia to take on the Eagles and their new head coach Chip Kelly. But it was Andy Reid, who coached in Philly for 14 years, whose team took the day as the Chiefs beat the Eagles outright… by 10 points, 26-16.
J.J. Watt and the Houston Texans looked so strong that oddsmakers made them 2.5 points favorites over Joe Flacco and his defending World Championship Baltimore Ravens playing at home at M&T Bank Stadium. But that prediction was not to be. The Ravens led by 17-9 at half time and shut out the Texans in the second half to take the contest by a final score of 30-9.
Aaron Rogers is widely considered to be one of the top 3 or 4 quarterbacks in pro football today. Although Green Bay was 1-1 going into the game, handicappers still gave them the nod and made them 2.5 point favorites over the Cincinnati Bengals playing in Cincinnati. It started off all Bengals as they jumped out to an early 14 point lead before the Packers roared back with 30 points in the second and third quarters. But the Bengal defense managed to shut down Rogers in the fourth quarter while their offense and defense combined for 13 points in the fourth quarter to upset Green Bay.
The Minnesota Vikings hosted the Cleveland Browns as 6.5 point favorites. In a close contest that ended up tied at the end of three quarters. The Browns scored a touchdown but the Vikings only managed a field goal and lost outright by 4 points.
The Detroit Lions went into their game against RGIII and the Washington Redskins as 2.5 point underdogs. No one thought that the Redskins would go 0-3…but that’s exactly what happened as the Lions won outright 27-20 in an exciting game that saw over 700 yards gained passing.
The biggest underdog win of the day was by the Indianapolis Colts who began play out in San Francisco as 10.5 dogs and proceeded to soundly defeat the 49ers by a final score of 27-7 as Andrew Luck and the Colts shined on the road.
The sneaky dog of the day goes to the Chargers. San Diego was 3.5 underdogs taking on the Tennessee Titans. The Chargers did lose the game, but only by 3 points!
