-The Arizona Diamondbacks relied on Welington Castillo this Wednesday for two home runs and a very timely triple, David Peralta set out to stop Felix Hernandez on his tracks and lead the ninth to an 8-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field.
Hernandez (12-6) was set on his 13th win for the campaign but was not able to fend off the power of the Arizona offense that were able to sneak past him 12 hits and seven runs after 6.2 innings. Hernandez was only able to take out seven Diamondbacks.
From the first inning. Paul Goldschmidt’s hit carried a connecting Ender Inciarte and AJ Pollock to rubber, then Castillo bounced it off the left, the same recipe repeated in the fourth to make it 5-0.
In the seventh, Peralta tripled and broke again Inciarte and Pollock went to the register to make it 7-1, Franklin Gutierrez tried to match the score for the Mariners, who has had its resurgence. Gutierrez hit a ground rule double in the eighth leading to Austin Jackson to put the second notch for Seattle but unable to come back from the whooping 8 runs, Inciarte finished 5-2 with two runs scored, Peralta 5-1 with 2 RBIs and Gutierrez 4-1, for a Diamondbacks win over Mariners 8-2.
-Jon Lester struck out 14 batters, a personal record and the most ever for any Cubs pitcher in more than a decade, to lead Chicago Cubs to a 3-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday, a day after being acquired from Toronto, Jose Reyes went 3-1 with a walk and a stolen base in his debut with the Rockies.
Lester (6-8) struck out seven of the first eight batters he faced, and nine of the first 14. He allowed two runs, five hits and walked one in eight innings, His personal record for strikeouts, 15, was posted on May 3rd last year with Boston. The last Cubs pitcher who was struck at least 14 was Mark Prior, who had 16 on September 30, 2004.
Carlos Gonzalez went 3-1 with an RBI and a run scored in addition to connecting its 21st homie for the campaign and Jonathan Herrera finished 3-0.
