UFC 214 takes place this Saturday in Anaheim, California, featuring several key fights that will catch the attention of fans, including the Cormier vs. Jones II light heavyweight world championship fight, which is the main event of the night.
Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier met for the first time in January 2015 at UFC 182 in Las Vegas, where the roles were reversed: Jones was the light heavyweight champion of the world and Cormier, the challenger. After five rounds, the decision was in favor of Jones who retained his title.
In May 2015, at UFC 187, then-champion Jones was scheduled to face Anthony Johnson. However, weeks before the event, he was suspended indefinitely and stripped of his title due to his involvement in a traffic accident in which one person was injured and where he was accused of leaving the scene of the incident.
UFC 187 instead called on Cormier to face Johnson for the vacant light heavyweight title. After three rounds, Cormier won by submission and was declared the winner and new champion.
On April 23, 2016, with his suspension lifted, Jones was scheduled to fight against Cormier at UFC 197, but the champion suffered a foot injury and withdrew from the fight almost a month earlier and was replaced by Ovince St. Preux, Jones won by unanimous decision but he failed to achieve his main goal: winning the title.
In a second attempt to get his revenge, on July 9, 2016, at UFC 200, Jones would finally face Cormier in what was considered to be one of the biggest event in the history of UFC, but days before, the fight was suspended due to an apparent doping violation by Jones.
Other important fights at UFC 214 are Tyron Woodley fighting Brazilian Demian Maia for the welterweight title and Cris Cyborg against Tonya Evinger for the women’s featherweight title.
