Professional Ice Hockey is a fast moving, occasionally brutal, sport which attracts its own base of fans that describe term ‘fanatic’. The entire game can go by with those big guys sliding up and down the ice rink chasing a little black disk called a puck but without anyone actually putting the puck in the net.
Maybe they just can’t see it all that well. It has been suggested that the puck be painted hot pink or perhaps make it light up somehow because the little vulcanized rubber disk is kind of hard to keep up with at times. There actually have been several attempts at making the puck more visible to the fans, especially on TV, including the ‘GlowPuck’ and the ‘FirePuck’ but none have lasted very long in the league.
However, when the action gets going, hockey can be one of the most exciting sports around. The Chicago Blackhawks and the Boston Bruins proved that in game six of the Stanly Cup Playoffs. The final minute and a half turned out to be one of the most exciting finales in recent memories as Chicago scored 2 goals in 17 seconds to come from behind and score a truly last minute victory and win the Stanly Cup.
The win was the second Stanley Cup Championship in four years for Chicago and Blackhawks fans everywhere went wild to say the least. CBSSports.com put up a short clip taken in a Chicago bar during those fateful 17 seconds when first the game tying and then the game winning goals were made. It was a telling demonstration of just how much the fans get into these games even on TV.
The entire NHL Playoff Series was hard fought and each game came down to the wire with three of the six matches going into overtime to determine the winner.
Game six was a heart-breaking loss for Boston goalie Tuukka Rask and the Bruins. They came so close so often. But, championships are won by champions and the Blackhawks came through in championship form to take home the Stanley Cup yet again.
Of course, the two guys that scored the two goals 17 seconds apart got the majority of the glory that night. Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews came through as true sports heroes and their play during those last few moments of game 6 in Boston will go down in NHL history.
