August 17 – 23 2015 in NFL

NFL Logo-Despite criticism over the Redskins name the President of the NFL franchise, Bruce Allen, said he did not change the team name despite being an obstacle to the construction of a new building in the coming years, the location of the new stadium could be in the capital of the United States or anywhere else depending on the proposals on the table available to house the Washington Redskins in the future.

The team currently plays at FedEx Field stadium, opened in 1997 in Landover, Maryland, and the franchise will still continue to explore new options for the new venue to be named the home of the Redskins even when the present lease expires in 2026.

At a press conference on Monday, Allen said the Redskins have talked with representatives from the states of Washington, Virginia and Maryland about the location of a new stadium, Redskins owner Dan Snyder has said he will never change the team name.

In early August, a federal judge ordered the cancellation of the trademark of the Redskins because the name might be derogatory to Native Americans.

-Chris Johnson has a new home in Arizona and will also contend for the Vince Lombardi Trophy after the Arizona Cardinals reach an agreement with the running back, the deal is expected to be for a year and about two million dollars for this next season.

Johnson, who turns 30 in September, became an unrestricted free agent after the New York Jets did not exercise their option after last year’s campaign, the veteran running back had his worst personal figures in carries (155), rushing yards (663) and only managed one touchdown last year on which he played under a two year and $ 8 million contract.

It was the first time in Johnson’s seven year career that he did not reach the thousand yards of rushing numbers, with his 1,077-yard season with the Tennessee Titans in 2013, he averaged some 3.9 yards per carry, Johnson has never averaged less than 4.0 yards per carry in a season even last year he came up with 4.3 yards gained per carry.

-With two championship rings under Eli Manning’s name the quarterback wants to become the highest paid player in the NFL, even above the QB Aaron Rodgers who enjoys the best salary today, the youngest of the Manning brothers is negotiating the most lucrative contract any player has reached in the history of the League.

“He (Manning) wants to be the best paid of any quarterback currently playing, he wants to be paid above Aaron Rodgers,” he said.

Currently, Aaron Rodgers earns about $ 22 million, while Eli will reach around 17 million dollars from the New England Patriots, some might say an insufficient figure for the quarterback with two Super Bowl titles in his career, Eli Manning is in the final year from his six-year contract with the Giants to complete the 97.5 million paid by the New York team.

-Will the Packers change their franchise colors? Vince Lombardi led the Green Bay Packers to win their first NFL titles in history wrapped in the trademark green and yellow uniforms that in the other hand may as well be a symbol for the worst lost moments of the Wisconsin team, Ron Wolf acknowledged that changing the team colors was an attempt to turn away the memory of the fateful 1970s and 1980s decades under which the Packers had only two postseason and four seasons with a winning record.

“I wanted to change the uniforms only to remove the stigma (the defeat),”  said Wolf, the general manager for Green Bay

There was even a “sample” viewing of three uniforms similar to the Notre Dame team clothing in the 1992 season, in which the then ‘scout’ and now general manager for the Packers, Ted Thompson, served as a model for the sleek uniform with no lines included, dark green jersey and socks and a golden tone for the pants and helmet.

“I (Thompson) was in the field running up and down. I thought ‘what’s going on here?” All  needed was that run to say ‘this is terrible. No no no. There is no way we can do this and after that I said, ‘This is silly,’ ” Wolf recalled.
