Dr. James Andrews is the foremost sports medicine doctors in the world today. No matter who they are or even where they are, if a top athlete is hurt he will most likely seek out Dr. Andrews to fix him up and put him back into action again.
Why? Good question. Probably, like in most other cases, because it works. When Dr. Andrews fixes you up, you stay fixed. Unless of course you go out there and do the same thing that put you on the table in the first place.
Today’s ultimate sports ‘fixer’ is a 71 year old orthopedic surgeon with practices in Birmingham and Pensacola who has worked on more famous athletes over the past few years that all others combined. He is the man and a professional athlete who is making millions of dollars a year to perform is just not willing to trust their high dollar bodies to anyone but the best and that’s Dr. James Andrews.
He is the team physician for the Universities of Auburn and Alabama as well as for the Washington Redskins in the NFL. He is on the speed dialer of just about every trainer in both college and pro athletics today and for good reason. It would probably be easier to make up a list of famous athletes who haven’t gone under his famous scalpel than those who have.
Dr. Andrew’s patient list includes some of the biggest names in sports including Drew Brees, Adrian Peterson, Bo Jackson and Jack Nicklaus, just to name a few.
These days find Dr. Andrews performing up to 50 surgeries per week on everyone from housewives to high-schoolers to wounded athletes. The doc is a busy guy. In addition to the practice of medicine, he has written a book called “Any Given Monday” which speaks to the preventing and treating of injuries in youth sports.
When asked why he has become the number one doctor of choice to athletes of all sizes Dr. Andrews replied, “To be perfectly honest with you I don’t know the answer to that question. But I’ve always been one who had a lot of self-criticism in trying to do the best I could do, and treated everybody as special regardless of what their age or ambitions were. Probably the thing that helped me most is I started off taking care of high school kids and small colleges, and those kids grew into big college and pros. They’ve always come back to me and always given me a lot of referrals.”
