Awesome Amateurs Aim At Augusta Part 2

The 77th Masters will begin this week at the Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia.  Among the 93 golfers qualifying for this years’ event there are some awesome amateurs just itching to get out there and get it on with the pros.

Officially, the Masters remains an invitation only event, but there is a set of qualifying criteria that determines who is included in the field.

• Patrick Cantlay from UCLA is the top-ranked amateur in the R&A World Amateur Golf Rankings.  One of the perks that come along with that distinction is getting invited to the first three majors of the year… one of which is the Masters.  He could very well be the most tour-ready amateur player this year.  At 20 years old, Cantlay seems unfazed by the upcoming pressure of playing with the pros.  The word on the street is that Patrick could make some folks sit up and take notice at Augusta.
• Texas Amateur Golfer Kelly Kraft won four major amateur titles last year, including beating Pat Cantlay at the U.S. Amateur at Erin Hills last year. That victory earned his entries into the Masters, the British Open and the U.S. Open.  Kraft is expected to turn pro after the Masters.
• At 54 years old, Randal Lewis from Michigan is the epitome of a true amateur golfer.  He has a good day time job and a full family schedule but still manages to sneak in enough golf practice to win the U.S. Mid-Amateur last year and his ticket to Augusta.  Lewis is a popular favorite with the gallery.
• Australia’s Bryden MacPherson qualified for the Masters this year by winning the British Amateur Open last year… only the second Aussie in history to pull that off. He already has received an invitation to play at The Memorial later this summer and is expected to turn pro after the Masters this year. MacPherson plays for the University of Georgia
• 21 year old Hideki Matsuyama from Ehime, Japan, will return for the second time to Augusta after winning the Asian Amateur Championship in 2010 at age 18. Despite the turmoil of having his native Sendai devastated by a tsunami, Matsuyama managed to make it to the Masters last year and ended up being the only amateur to make the cut.

While none of these guys are expected to give the pro field serious competition, there is some serious talent in this group and, well… you just never know
