There are 93 golfers who have qualified to compete in the 77th annual Masters played at the Augusta National Golf Club this year. Officially, the Masters remains an invitation only event, but there is a set of qualifying criteria that determines who is included in the field.
Here is a quick look at some of the amateur golfers who are getting ready to put it all on the line and play golf with the big boys.
- 14 year old Tianlang Guan from Guangzhou, China is getting major attention because of his tender age and his 125 pound physique. He beat out some serious competition to win the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship and his ticket to Augusta. He is currently rated the number 12 amateur golfer in the world.
- Steven Fox plays for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He won the U.S. Amateur Championship on his very first try… and qualified for a trip to Augusta. He was actually down two with two holes to play and won three straight holes to win his ticket to the Masters.
- This will be the fourth trip to the Masters for veteran amateur Nathan Smith from Pittsburg. This year he won the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship which qualified him for yet another swing at Augusta. His record at the Mid-Amateur is an astounding 32-4… he has won it four times now and speculation is high that he might just make the cut this year at Augusta.
- Michael Weaver plays for the University of California at Berkley. He placed second to Steven Fox in the U.S. Amateur Open. Fortunately for Weaver, the runners-up get invited to the Masters as well. He is currently ranked the number 21 college golfer in the country.
- Alan Dunbar is 33 years old and plays in Northern Ireland. He was the winner of the British Amateur Championship where he had to par the last two holes for a come from behind victory.
- T.J. Vogel is a senior golfer from the University of Florida at Gainesville. He is the only amateur who qualified easily for Augusta by winning the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship by a 10 & 12 stroke margin. Vogel is certainly the brashest of the amateurs. He told the press, “It’s too surreal now to think I’ll be playing in the Masters. Once I get that invitation, it will hit me.”
