In the last two years, the San Diego Padres have signed Eric Hosmer and Manny Machado, but they also have a loaded farm system featuring 10 of the game’s top 100 prospects.
Although prospects can be hit or miss projects it’s unlikely that all of them will go on to become superstars, however, it’s hard to imagine that none of them will develop nicely and go on to become busts.
Fernando Tatis Jr. has been turning heads in winter ball and minor-league play and big things are expected from the No. 2 prospect in all of baseball this season.
Although the Padres have shown that they’re willing to spend money, their rotation remains an issue as they don’t have a reliable starter to anchor their rotation.
They have five great pitching prospects in the minors, but only two are expected to make their debut this year and only one has reached the AAA level.
The Padres, who have missed the playoffs every year since 2006 and have had losing seasons every year since 2010, should take a step in the right direction in this campaign. But are probably still a year away from becoming a playoff contender.
