Serbian tennis players Novak Djokovic, ATP’s number-one ranked player, will be the top seed at the men’s singles U.S Open, which starts in Flushing Meadows, New York on August 29.
Djokovic, defending champion and a two-time winner of this event, may as well be the man to beat this year at Flushing Meadows even though he will have stiff competition from several opponents, most likely Scot Andy Murray. The Britton is on a hot streak after winning this year’s Wimbledon and the Olympic tournament in Rio.
Djokovic try to win his third Grand Slam singles tournament of the year after victories at the Australian Open and Roland Garros.
Murray, seeded second, is the oddsmakers’ favorite to face Djokovic in the final. Other players called to go deep in the tournament are Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka, Spaniard Rafael Nadal and Canadian Milos Raonic, who this year reached the finals at Wimbledon and lost to crowd-favorite Murray.
Nadal is trying to leave behind the semi-final loss to Juan Martin del Potro at the Rio Olympic Games and triumph at a tournament he last won in 2013. According to linemakers the odds of Nadal doing so were as of August 26 at +2700.
This year Arthur Ashe Stadium at the Billy Jean King National Tennis Center went through a $550 million improvement. As a result, it now features a $150 million retractable roof that should help make rain delays and cancelled matches stuff of the past as it closes in about seven minutes.
Croat Marin Cilic is looking to conquer his second Grand Slam. In 2014 he defeated Japan’s Kei Nishikori in a U.S Open final featuring two first-timers.
Swiss Roger Federer, a five-time winner of the U.S Open, and one of the most dominant players in the history of this Grand Slam tournament; will not participate because he is nursing a recurring knee injury and will skip the rest of the 2016 season.
