This is the time of the year when professional golfers and the Professional Golfers Association… the PGA… go into their final round of playoffs for the FedEx Cup for 2013. The award goes to the year’s top performer on the PGA tour.
After the PGA Championship tournament at Oak Hill in New York and the Wyndham Championship in North Carolina, the PGA began its 2013 playoff rounds consisting of four events taking place from August 22 through September 22 to determine the FedEx Championship.
The competition began at the Barclays on the Liberty National course in New Jersey. The field consisted of the top 125 golfers on the 2013 PGA Tour as determined by their point standings after the PGA Championship which finished on August 11 with Jason Dufner the winner.
Golfers will carry all points earned through the FedEx Cup competition for the first three playoff events. Each of the first 3 events, beginning with the Barclays, will award 2,500 points to the winner of the match and the remaining points distributed down among the other finishers.
The FedEx Cup Playoffs features a progressive cut through the first three events to determine the final 30 golfers who qualify for the Tour Championship. 125 players started at the Barclays but only 100 will be traveling to TPC Boston for the Deutsche Bank Tournament beginning August 30th. When the BMW Championship gets underway at Lake Forest, Illinois on September 12, only the 70 top scorers from the previous two events will be teeing off.
The competition really gets going on September when only the top 30 golfers remaining in contention will go head to head in a four day event in Atlanta that will determine the 2013 FedEx Cup Champion.
At this point, Tiger Woods is the odds on favorite to win the championship at 7-to-1 with Barclay’s winner Adam Scott right behind him at 10-to-1. Woods already has accumulated a little over 4,000 points so far. Phil Mickelson, who had a good showing early on at Barclays, is listed at 12-to-1 with Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose at 15-to-1.
Matt Kucher, who had a great first two rounds at Liberty National, is up there in the running at 25-to-1 along with Jason Day, Henrik Stenson, Dustin Johnson, Jim Furyk and Webb Simpson.
Favorite Tiger Woods has had some issues with his back causing some books to take down the matchup odds on the world’s number one golfer for these playoffs.
