Let’s face it, the Quarterback on any NFL Football team is the highest profile position on the field. The game is just set up that way. The QB is the first guy to get his hands on the ball each play and he is the only player (usually) that tosses the ball down the field.
Back in 2003, there were only two quarterbacks in the NFL that passed for over 4,000 yards… last year there were eleven. Ten years ago there were only three NFL teams that passed on over 60% of their plays. Last year there were eleven.
While Jay Cutler certainly does not count among the most beloved Quarterbacks in the league, he still has the potential to light up the scoreboards with some big passing yardage next year. He has a new head coach and a new offensive scheme that should give him the opportunity to shine.
New Head Coach Mark Trestman’s West Coast offense is similar to that of Denver Broncos back in 2008 when Cutler threw for 4,526 yards, second only to Drew Brees’ 5,000-yard campaign. Cutler has the receivers this year in Brandon Marshall, Alshon Jeffery and Matt Forte to help him to match those numbers. Cutler opens at +2,200 to take the title. There may be good value there.
The Baltimore Ravens have just signed a deal with Super Bowl winning quarterback Joe Flacco that totals a reported $120 million. Joe had damned well better be in competition for the passing title next year. He had 1,140 yards passing in the four playoff games last year including 287 in the Super Bowl. His odds to win the title next year are +1500.
Of course the overall favorite to take the title is the current title holder, Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints. He was the lone quarterback to top the 5,000 yard mark last year and the handicappers have him at +385 to do it again.
