Talk about super-charged sports action. This time of the year brings out the college baseball fanatics. Like my mother. She’s 82 years old and knows every player on the LSU baseball team by name, first name and… she has been keeping up with the team for most of her adult life.
There are a lot of fans like my Mom out there. You will often see them in the stands with their university hats on and cheering like mad for the home team even though some of them have been out of college for over 40 years.
Of course, the grey panthers are not the only fans of college baseball. The various student bodies provide plenty of fodder for baseball fanatics and they follow their teams across the country to cheer them on.
Now the playoffs have begun. The various conference titles have been decided and now it’s a free for all. The regionals will narrow the field down from the original 64 to 16 competing for the finals in Omaha in June.
LSU Coach Paul Mainieri told reporters after the Tigers had defeated Vanderbilt for the SEC Championship, “Everything we’ve done to this point matters zilch. Now, it’s a matter of you have to win before you lose two games on the weekend.”
LSU was coming off a 5-4, 11th inning victory over the Commodores and were already confident of a top seed in the upcoming regionals which will be played at Alex Box Stadium on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge. LSU is the number 4 seed going into tournament competition. They are 52-9 on the season… so far.
The winner of the Baton Rouge regionals will advance to Blacksburg, Virginia for the next step on the road to Omaha where LSU has not put in an appearance since winning the Tigers sixth national championship title in 2009.
Once again, the SEC leads the nation with nine teams making the 64 club line-up and 4 SEC teams hosting the regional games. “The goal is to be a national seed because you now get to host a regional, and if you’re fortunate enough to win, you get to host that super regional,” said Mainieri.
Las Vegas oddsmakers will probably not have solid lines up on the games until a couple of days before the event, but fans across the country will be lining up to get a couple of bucks down of their favorite teams.
