Although for most of the wagering world summer is in the middle of the ‘slow’ season, the Sports Books in the state of Nevada had a banner month in June mostly thanks to record wagering on the NBA Playoffs between the Miami Heat and the San Antonio Spurs but also including augmented wagering on Major League Baseball this year.
Stats from the Nevada State Gaming Control Board reveal the sports books in the state brought in more than $3.37 million on basketball including both NBA and NCAA basketball playoff games. Those figures include winnings from the NBA Playoffs which went to 7 games and reportedly exceeded the $1.36 million taken in during June of 2012.
Major League Baseball earned $6.88 million for the books in June after bringing in $10.6 million overall for April and May which means that the MLB season totals so far for 2013 add up to $17.4 million… which was a major gain for the books over the meager $4.21 million they brought in the previous year.
The increase in action for Nevada Sports Books made a huge jump from May to June bringing in a total of $12.7 million in June as opposed to just $5.69 million in May. So far, for the year 2013, Nevada Sports Books have won over $60,000,000. The big books on the Las Vegas strip, all by themselves, accounted for $8.14 million of Nevada’s overall winnings in June.
Outside of basketball and baseball we also had the NHL finals, various Tennis matches and some of the major golf tournaments on the PGA tour which all took place in June… not to mention Boxing and Mixed Martial Arts matches which, along with soccer, are gaining popularity with bettors across the country. These ‘other sports’ brought in $1.19 million in April, $1.18 million in May but jumped up to $2.6 million for the month of June.
Looking at the entire June to June 12 month period ending on June 30, Nevada books won a total of $54.34 million which was a 7.76% increase over the previous year.
June was also a good month for Las Vegas Casinos as summer vacationers flocked to ‘sin city’ for a little R&R. But, Nevada Casino’s numbers were a bit down from 2012. Last year they brought in $832,534,319 but dropped to $792,496,546 this year. Believe it or not, slot machines accounted for $521,000,000 of that figure.
