Who in the world bets a fifteen team parlay? Everyone knows that the odds to win are astronomical. Simply pick the winners, straight up, for all the NFL games played on Sunday and Monday.
Nothing to it. So, you give it a shot, what the hell. Bet $5 just for fun.
William Hill runs what they call a Pro Progressive Football Parlay Card Challenge where players can put down their bets and take their chances on picking all of the pro football winners over the weekend. One loss and you’re out. The book only pays out for a perfect, 15 game card.
The cool thing about this particular Parlay Card is the ‘progressive’ part. If nobody hits on one week, then the pot carries over to the proceeding week’s action. In this case there were no winners in week one or in week two, so the prize money had built up to a nice little jackpot when the games went off the board.
A guy from Arizona picked out his 15 teams and laid out his $5 wager with William Hill for the Week 3 NFL action. When it was all over he walked away with a dandy $57,935, for a five dollar bet! Was he that good or that lucky, or was it a little bit of both?
Last season in the NFL the wagering jackpot reached $109,290 before some lucky soul captured the big prize in Week 11. Next week the jackpot will go back down to a mere $13,950 and start all over. Still in all, almost fourteen dimes for a five buck bet ain’t too shabby!
Hill had almost four thousand entries taking a shot at the Pro Progressive Football Parlay Card Challenge, but only one winner. One other player actually got 14 of the 15 picked correctly. His wager was graded as a loss. However, if he had also hit that fifteenth game, the two winners would have split the pot. Still, not bad for a single days take.
Imagine the guy that eventually won sweating it out all day Sunday and then having to wait until Monday Night Football to see the final results. If Justin Tucker had missed that field goal that won the game for the Ravens, no winner. If the Cowboys had not staged an improbable comeback from 21 points down… lost again.
Miss just one pick, and it’s all over. But what about the poor player from Delaware who got knocked out of a $100,000 winning ticket when the Eagles kicked that last second field goal to beat the Colts 30-27, can you imagine?
