Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic, ranked fourth in ATP, will not be able to train for at least six weeks due to an elbow injury and as a result he could miss the rest of the season, said the Serbian sports press.
Zdenko Milinkovic, an orthopedic surgeon and doctor of the Davis Cup’s Serbian team, told the sports daily Sportski zurnal that Djokovic “must remain inactive for six to twelve weeks,”.
The doctor explained that, during that period, the former world number one will not be able to train, although he will probably be able to work on his physical condition.
According to the newspaper, it’s almost certain that Djokovic will not be able to participate in the US Open, which begins in late August, nor play for the Serbian team in the Davis Cup semi-final against France in mid-September.
Djokovic is expected to sacrifice the rest of the season to fully recover from the injury he has suffered for a year and a half, and in that case, he could descend to the 15th position in the world ranking.
Milinkovic indicated that the Serbian tennis player has a bone bruise due to the continuous activity of the ATP schedule and the little rest and treatment he’s given his injury since the start of the season.
The doctor however indicated that the symptoms are fading and pointed out that surgery would be “a last option.”
Djokovic had to abandon his Wimbledon Quarterfinals match in the second set, against Czech Tomas Berdych, as he was looking to win a fourth Wimbledon trophy and his first since 2015.
